The trap mechanism is well thought out. It consists of two halves-valves, similar to the shells of molluscs. Along the edges of the valves there are two rows of "teeth", and along the rim and along the inner row of teeth there are glands secreting pleasantly smelling nectar. It is he who attracts insects. The trap is equipped with three trigger hairs inside. As soon as the victim, in the process of absorbing nectar, touches these hairs, the shutters close, forming a "stomach". Having locked the prey, the plant begins the digestion process, which lasts for several days. Then the leaf "goes hunting" again. On average, each leaf eats three flies per life.

Care:
- The plant loves direct sunlight.
- The plant needs a lot of light and moisture. It is best to grow a flycatcher on a window, where a lot of sun gets in.
- For the successful growth of the plant, it is required to transplant it into a mixture: 50% acidic soil for 50% perlite.
- Do not water the flycatcher with plain tap water. It loves distillate water that can be got in the summer by collecting rain waters, but in the winter by collecting the snow.
- Venus flytrap needs fairly moderate watering in the warm season. But in winter, the soil can be almost dry.
- It should be watered from below, adding water to the saucer in which the pot stands.
- It is necessary that water is always nearby, since the plant consumes lot of moisture.
Humidity:
In very dry air, flycatcher leaves dry out and look very unattractive. Therefore, a water pan should be used to increase the humidity. Some of the water will be used by the plant, but some of the water will evaporate, creating a slightly humid microclimate.
Fertilizers:
Never feed a Venus flytrap fertilizer! This is not only unnecessary, but also potentially fatal. Being predatory, they collect all the necessary nutrients from flies and other small insects, which they catch and digest.
Temperature:
Normal room temperature is ideal for growing a Venus flytrap. They can also easily cope with a slight drop in temperature, especially during the cold season.
How to Grow and Care for a Venus Flytrap in Winter
Winter sleep of the venus flytrap
Like many other plants, the Venus flytrap needs a period of winter dormancy, when the plant seems to be dead (its leaves turn black and die), but it just rests. Store the plant between 35°F and 50°F. Don't let the terrarium freeze; the plant may die. When the days begin to lengthen, on the day of the vernal equinox, you should begin to increase the supply of heat and light to the terrarium. A covered plastic container with peat can serve as a terrarium.
