A candle, which acts as a vacuum, is placed in the ear and lit. The vibration of the air rising up through the candle is assisted by the natural movement of the flame, which gently massages the eardrum. This creates a warm swirling airflow. Candles work like a chimney, drawing any contaminants to the surface where they can be gently removed. Most of these are blown up the candle's "chimney", although some can be found in the condensed residue of candle wax after being removed from the ear, or may even make their way to the surface 24 to 48 hours afterward.
As a rule, the whole procedure takes about 30 minutes.
